Privacy for a local-first learning tool.

EnglishCC is a browser extension for YouTube-based English learning. It provides a clearer caption layer, local hover lookup, vocabulary, word highlighting, and review. Lookup can use Chinese or English definitions. The current version keeps learning data in the browser and does not require an account. AI explanations are optional enhancements, not the required lookup path.

Data EnglishCC Handles

  • Website content: caption text from supported YouTube video pages, selected words, related subtitle sentences, video titles, video URLs, and the video timestamp when a word is saved.
  • User activity: lookup history, saved vocabulary, learning status, review progress, and user-selected caption and lookup settings.

How Data Is Used

  • To render a custom English caption layer on YouTube.
  • To show basic Chinese or English lookup cards, save vocabulary, and remember the original subtitle sentence and source video.
  • To display, sort, group, and review saved vocabulary in the vocabulary book and study page.
  • To play word pronunciation when the user actively clicks a pronunciation button.

Local Storage

  • Caption display settings, lookup settings, saved vocabulary, lookup history, source video references, and cached meanings are stored in local browser extension storage.
  • The current version does not provide cloud sync for learning data. Vocabulary and lookup history remain in local browser extension storage.

Third Parties and Remote Requests

  • EnglishCC does not execute remotely hosted code. Extension pages use JavaScript and CSS bundled with the extension.
  • The EnglishCC website may use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand page visit trends and site performance. This is for website analytics only and is not used to track learning content inside the extension.
  • Word lookup uses bundled local ECDICT Chinese or English definitions first. Optional AI explanations use the EnglishCC API or a user-configured provider only when enabled.
  • When the user actively clicks a pronunciation button, EnglishCC may request pronunciation audio for that word from dict.youdao.com. If remote audio is unavailable, it falls back to browser speech synthesis.

What EnglishCC Does Not Do

  • EnglishCC does not sell or rent user data.
  • EnglishCC does not use or transfer user data for purposes unrelated to its single purpose.
  • EnglishCC does not use user data for creditworthiness, lending, advertising profiles, or third-party marketing.

User Control

  • Users can delete locally stored data by clearing the extension storage in their browser.
  • Users can delete individual saved words or remove them in batches from the vocabulary library.
  • Users can uninstall the extension to stop EnglishCC from processing YouTube pages.
