Privacy for a local-first learning tool.

EnglishCC provides YouTube captions, local word lookup, saved-word highlighting and vocabulary review. You can use the extension without an account and keep your learning data on this device. Optional Google sign-in syncs vocabulary and review progress between the browser and mobile vocabulary libraries.

Data EnglishCC Handles

  • Website content: caption text from supported YouTube video pages, selected words, related subtitle sentences, video titles, video URLs, and the video timestamp when a word is saved.
  • User activity: lookup history, saved vocabulary, learning status, review progress, and user-selected caption and lookup settings.

How Data Is Used

  • To render a custom English caption layer on YouTube.
  • To show basic Chinese or English lookup cards, save vocabulary, and remember the original subtitle sentence and source video.
  • To display, sort, group, and review saved vocabulary in the vocabulary book and study page.
  • To play word pronunciation when the user actively clicks a pronunciation button.

Local Storage

  • Caption display settings, lookup settings, saved vocabulary, lookup history, source video references, and cached meanings are stored in local browser extension storage.
  • Account sync is optional. Signing in with Google sends account identity information to EnglishCC for authentication. Signed-in vocabulary records, including meanings, source sentences and video references, lookup metadata attached to those records and review progress, are uploaded to EnglishCC and synchronized with the same account in the browser and mobile vocabulary libraries. Offline changes are uploaded after reconnection. Display settings and watch-time statistics remain local. Signing out does not delete cloud records; clearing local storage or uninstalling is not cloud deletion.

Third Parties and Remote Requests

  • EnglishCC does not execute remotely hosted code. Extension pages use JavaScript and CSS bundled with the extension.
  • The EnglishCC website may use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand page visit trends and site performance. This is for website analytics only and is not used to track learning content inside the extension.
  • Word lookup uses dictionary definitions bundled with the extension. The current extension does not offer an AI explanation setting.
  • When the user actively clicks a pronunciation button, EnglishCC may request pronunciation audio for that word from dict.youdao.com. If remote audio is unavailable, it falls back to browser speech synthesis.

What EnglishCC Does Not Do

  • EnglishCC does not sell or rent user data.
  • EnglishCC does not use or transfer user data for purposes unrelated to its single purpose.
  • EnglishCC does not use user data for creditworthiness, lending, advertising profiles, or third-party marketing.

User Control

  • Users can delete locally stored data by clearing the extension storage in their browser.
  • Users can delete individual saved words or remove them in batches from the vocabulary library.
  • Users can uninstall the extension to stop EnglishCC from processing YouTube pages.
